Local Accountants with Extensive Experience

Every industry has similarities when it comes to tax and accounting.  Any s-corp, for example, despite the industry type, will file form 1120S, and any partnership will file form 1065.  C-corps, whether they are a shoe factory or home service company will file form 1120.  In filing they'll be subject to the same tax laws and will all file using the same forms at the same time of year or on a designated fiscal year.  What is and is not considered deductible will follow the same guidelines.  Bookkeeping will mostly be kept the same, and so on.  Consequently, if you are looking for a tax preparer who simply knows how to input your self-prepared numbers correctly, then the accountant you select is less important.

But if you're looking for someone who can provide more than just accurate data entry, consider that accountant's experience and the types of clients they typically work with.

Our team is local and having a local accountant matters.  Remote accountants from these ever-increasing online bookkeeping and tax prep services lack the local knowledge and familiarity with regional and local trends.  For example, at yearend, if you're considering making a large purchase for your business to help offset taxes and you're an HVAC company, a local accountant will understand that the HVAC industry at yearend is in its worst part of the year.  As a seasonal business, HVAC suffers in our area from November through February.  But an accountant working remotely and providing his services from up north may not realize that as their HVAC industry follows a different trend, staying very busy in the winter because of the climate differences.  Large purchases to offset taxes at yearend is a common, generalized tax mitigation strategy, but for a locally seasonal business in its off-season it is a potentially dangerous move that could threaten cashflow.  A local accountant understands this and takes it into consideration when giving advice.

We Are Not Experts in Everything

No one firm specializes in everything.  Specifically, there are two areas where we do not specialize and tend to refer potential clients of these types elsewhere: manufacturing and very large corporations.  Manufacturing tends to involve complicated tax provisions seldom used elsewhere, and we recommend using an accountant that specializes in and regularly works with manufacturing companies.  'Very large corporations' is a relative term.  We have worked with and still do corporations grossing over fifty-million dollars annually, so it is not simply revenue that qualifies you as a larger corporation.  Depending on the type of operations, scale, range, and other factors, we tend to advise larger companies to hire a dedicated in-house accountant or accounting team.  Outsourcing to a firm like ours is tremendously valuable to small business owners, even small business owners with larger revenue streams; but a complex, wide ranged, larger corporation usually requires dedicated in-house accountants.

C-corps, as an entity type, are worked with less often by firms that deal with small businesses.  Typically, when we encounter a small business owner established as a C-corp we look first at a conversion to an S-corp.  S-corps receive more favorable tax treatment, avoiding the double taxation often faced with C-corps, and are generally the best option for a small business.  We do, however, regularly use C-corps as secondary entities as part of complex tax strategies for higher-income earners.  If you're net revenue as married filers, for example, begins to exceed four-hundred thousand, utilizing a tax strategy involving a C-corp could be extremely valuable.  But as your primary entity type C-corps for small businesses are rarely a good option, and so because of this and our general advice against them we work with them seldomly.

Where We Are Experts

With the exception of manufacturing, any small business falls into our area of expertise.  Small businesses share enough in common allow a firm that specializes in small businesses to be of great value to any one of them.  Even so, there are a few industries with which we have exceptional familiarity.

Home Services

In most cases, home service providers are quite similar.  They face the same accounting struggles as well as marketing, administrative, cashflow, and startup requirements.

Real Estate

Whether you are a professional realtor, broker, or property manager, or an individual with just a few or a great many rental properties, our firm has a unique level of experience dealing with real estate.  Parter Christopher Olson, EA is an avid real estate investor, including having invested in a real estate brokerage, Southern Bay Realty.
